The Gait Clinic

What actually happens during your Gait Analysis at The Gait Clinic?

A complete session will usually last for around 3 hours. It may vary depending on your presentation, however can resemble below:

  • Your physiotherapist and orthotist will quiz you about your goals and what you hope to achieve.
  • They will conduct a thorough physical gait assessment checking muscle strength, range of motion and gathering other information
  • You will then have your walking gait filmed by two cameras, this will be analysed by the physiotherapist and orthotist.
  • A prototype assistive technology prescription will be formed based on this information and you will be able to trial sample devices to check for improvement or changes. You will be filmed again using this technology to check for improvements.
  • A report will be created where your filmed gait is broken down into components and scored.
  • Using this information, a physical therapy and definitive orthotic prescription plan is created. This plan can be enacted by Orthotics Plus and Klint Neuro, or by the provider of your choice.
  • At a time of your choosing, we can reassess and reanalyse to check for improvement and to revise your prescription and plan
This process is designed to be cyclical, and can be repeated until you have improved as much as possible.

Your Walking Gait Analysis Review

At the conclusion of the gait analysis, we will assess all the collected data and write a detailed report covering your gait issues and proposed interventions. We will include relevant metrics such as walking speed, notable gait deviations, and your score on scientifically validated gait measurements, such as the Edinburgh Visual Gait Score.

These measurements allow us a baseline to track your progress.

We can provide still images and short snippets of video to referrers and other health professionals.

Our clinic services paediatrics too!

In fact, our lead orthotist at The Gait Clinic previously specialised in paediatric management for many years.

To ensure we are at the forefront of best practice, our lead clinicians have completed additional training under Elaine Owen. Elaine Owen is an internationally renowned physiotherapist who pioneered the segmental analysis and orthotic management of children with conditions such as cerebral palsy.

Our longer appointment times allow for a thorough, individually tailored approach to assistive technology prescription and tuning orthotic devices via computer assisted gait analysis to encourage optimal development and to allow your child to move, play and grow!
